The increase in PE from 30,000 to 85,000 as well as a more stringent discharge standard required the addition of secondary treatment. A phased construction programme was required to maintain operation and treatment from the existing plant during construction of the new works
Key features included the development of a very successful sludge import and export centre, designed and installed to receive problematic minor works imports and producing sludge cake for the incinerator to a dry solids content in excess of 28%. Re-use of the existing assets ensured a VFM solution minimising programme.
